This is a characteristically refined reproduction of the P4—one of the most famous and discriminating pickup models in the world. The NP4 will provide a full-bodied, resonant, and throaty grind hat has the capacity for juggernaut slap and unrelenting fervor that will surely dismantle the ergonomics of any crowd that has lost all sense of groove. Despite the strength of these pickups, the fountainhead of their tonal quality is of course the warm, fat, and bright character that the originals are known for. These pickups are available with either alnico III or V magnets: the IIIs supplying a sort of 60s style J sound led down a hotter, more insurgent signal path. By contrast, the alnico V provides a punchier and brighter character with a sinewy aftertaste that will wrangle the texture of any player’s prospects in either amplifying their slap technique or projecting an R&B-type sound.

History: The NP4 was fabricated for the sole purpose of reproducing one of the most famous pickups in the world. The result is a full tone with the same unforgiving funk and force that is synonymous with the big, bright, and hollow tone of the historically renowned P. The NP4 was one of the first 4-string bass pickups made available at Nordstrand, designed and built in sunny Redlands, California.

Magnet Types:

Alnico III magnets differ from Alnico V in that they are warmer with a softer character. Think of them like a 60’s J style sound taken even further down the warm and fat path. Alnico V by contrast is brighter, cleaner and punchier, and will have a more wiry, stringy character. As another example, we’d recommend A3 for fretless or a fat 60’s Jaco type thing and A5 is great for a modern slap type thing or an R and B sound.
